Located right in the center of the Davao Gulf where the city touches the sea, the Talomo Beach is a spectacular beachfront full of pristine shores and a rich history.
The Davao Gulf bay has its coastline stretching out like arms welcoming whatever is coming from the sea. All things then lead to the center of the gulf, which is the Beach of Talomo. With beaming white sand on its shores and a gentle sea breeze, deep sea particles are washed ashore such as pieces of corals, shells, and even small crabs.
The beach of Talomo is one among Davao’s finest as banked by resorts such as the Villa Victoria, Ammi and Jones. These beach lodges offer high-class accommodations and amenities along with the beautiful Talomo beachfront. These resorts also offer activities such as mini-gold, scuba diving and even the use of the finest swimming pools.
But more than all the glamorous beach fronts of Talomo, you’d be surprised to know a bit of its history. The shoreline was once a major naval beachhead used by both the Japanese and the Americans during World War II. Japanese forces came to the Talomo coastline in the mid-1940s and headed towards the Matina Crossing to the city proper. The then-governor courageously delayed the invasion at the Generoso Bridge by giving up his own life. The beach was then a mere mute witness to the violence of war. Spanish Conquistadores similarly saw the potential strategic location as being the ideal backdoor gateway to Mindanao.
Scuba divers are in for a treat as there are dozens of sunken warships about 200 meters off the shoreline, just waiting to be explored. Ask the locals to take you there on a small boat to get dropped off. Most drop-off points are a mere 20 to 30 meter distance from the exciting deep sea wreckage. The water current is calm and perfect at Talomo largely due to a long stretch of coastline from Binugao and a smaller bay found by the protruding tip of Matina Aplaya to the east. This is also the reason why it was once the perfect landing spot for war amphibians and quite suitable nowadays for swimmers and beach strollers.
But despite the long history of battles and wars at the Talomo Beach, it still remains a favorite destination of tourists from all over the world, especially the American and Japanese. Because of it being rich in historical spots, Americans and Japanese frequent Davao and drop by the coastline to enjoy the view.
Talomo is a mere ten to fifteen minutes away from the downtown area of Davao City. Any form of land transportation can take you there as well as jeepneys that are bound for Talomo. Once you get to the Talomo proper, you can ask a tricycle driver to take you to the actual beach site. Know that fares are usually negotiable, so ask for the lowest possible price.
It’s unusual to find a beach with a beautiful white sand shoreline coupled with a rich historical significance for the city. The Talomo Beach is the perfect vacation spot to offer you just that.
