It is quite an impressive effort to maintain and conserve some of nature’s gifts in one sanctuary amidst the heavy industrialization and progress of a city. The Philippine Eagle Center is a safe place for Philippine eagles and other species that are significant to the rich and beautiful ecosystems of the country. Located in Baranggay Malagod within the Baguio District of Davao City, this bird haven continues to lure tourists in because of its unique offerings.

It may be obvious that the Great Philippine Eagle is the national bird of the Philippines. It is the one of the largest, rarest and most powerful birds in the world. The Philippines actually has a law that says killing these critically endangered species is punishable by law with twelve years in jail and a hefty fine.

The Philippine Eagle Center was originally designed as an exhibition, but, due to the center’s charm and beauty, it slowly transformed into one of the most sought-after sights to visit in Davao City. Supported by the Philippine Eagle Foundation, the center aims to raise awareness of people about the need to conserve our natural resources. Aside from the stars of the haven, visitors may also ponder at other exciting animals which include ten other species of birds, four species of mammals and two species of reptiles. The center also serves as an educational venue to learn about captive breeding techniques, conservation breeding programs and community-based programs. Even better, lectures on issues such as field research programs, conservation education programs and the Philippine Eagle Foundation can be arranged as well.

For more special education programs, visitors can engage in activities such as the keeper talk wherein the bird’s caretaker will talk about the specific bird’s characteristics, biology, other interesting facts and the bird’s life at the Center. Falconry activities will then let visitors see the birds in action in the air rather than being enclosed in their cages. Finally, students will take pleasure in learning about eagles and life sciences through specific modules and themes in the open classroom projects of the center.

The Philippine Eagle Center simulates a tropical rain forest setting and is 45 minutes to an hour away from downtown Davao City. In order to maintain and support its operations, the management collects a 50 peso fee for adults and a 30 peso entrance fee for kids. It’s a small price to pay to catch a glimpse of the beauty of these endangered species. A guided tour is available at the center free of charge but it should be booked in advance to ensure the availability of the guides on your visit. The Center is open from 8 in the morning until 5 in the afternoon daily, which includes holidays.

Tourists flock to this place in order to experience the beauty and art of taking care of these famed monkey-eating eagles. A visit to the city of Davao is deemed incomplete without dropping by the Philippine Eagle Center. There is no doubt that this place reestablishes the glory of these distinct and dying breed of eagles in the country and a good place for bird watching.
